Dr. Grace Buckman, the leader of Afua Asantewaa’s medical team, has explained why they decided to end the project after 126 hours.
Dr. Buckman emphasized that the sing-a-thon was stopped due to genuine concerns for Afua’s health.
During a press conference at the Akwaaba Village on Friday morning, Dr Buckman said that Afua’s attempt to break the record for the longest singing marathon by an individual is inspiring to everyone. However, the medical team discovered that her lack of sleep in the past few days was negatively affecting her overall well-being.
Explaining further, the medical team said her sleep deprivation in the last few days was affecting her body system and the signs were not too good for her total wellbeing. Her medics revealed that Afua started showing signs of mental stress, such as making unnecessary comments and gestures.
This was an expected outcome that had been explained to her before the competition started. Despite her initial plan to end the sing-a-thon on Saturday or by midday Friday, the medical team strongly advised her to end it earlier to protect her from any fatal health conditions.
Dr. Buckman said, “There’s only a point you can go as a person. She has done so well and we are extremely proud of her. We have gotten to a point that as a medical team, her health is very important. At the moment, we want her to rest so she will bounce back to us.”
Afua Asantewaa has completed an impressive 126-hour singing marathon to break the current record for the longest individual singing session. Starting at midnight on Christmas Eve and ending on the morning of Friday, December 29, 2023, her incredible achievement now awaits confirmation from the respected judges of Guinness World Records.
Surpassing the previous record set by India’s Sunil Waghmare in 2012, Afua’s commitment and talent have propelled her into unexplored territory. Expressing her gratitude to a crowd of devoted fans gathered in the lively capital city of Accra, she revealed she lost track of time at some point.
She said, “At a point I kept asking which day it was and I finally got to know that today is Friday… I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in this sing-a-thon attempt.”
