GFA is at the verge of appointing German tactician Jurgen Kohler as the head coach to replace Chris Hughton.

Jurge Kohler, a 1990 World Cup winner with Germany, has expressed keen interest in the role and submitted his application before the February 2, 2024 deadline set by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

With over 15 years of coaching experience and a UEFA Pro License, Kohler has managed various clubs, including FC Viktoria Köln. Notable roles include managing the German U21 team, being Director

of Football at Bayern Leverkusen, Manager at MSV Duisburg, and Director of Football at vfR Aalen.

In his playing days, Kohler was associated with clubs like Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich. Now aged 58, he brings a distinctive blend of leadership, discipline, and a proven track record in team development and nurturing young talent.

Kohler's accomplishments with the German U21 team, restructuring and elevating the team's performance, stand out, offering promise to German football and ensuring talented players received opportunities in the senior national team.

Kohler was born in Lambsheim, some 300 kilometres south of where he finished his storied professional career in 2002. But the centre-back started it 20 minutes away from home, after leaving his local team to join Waldhof Mannheim.

A third-tier side these days, Waldhof became a Bundesliga club in 1983 - the year after Kohler joined them. The teenager made his league debut in April 1984, and it was an experience that served him well.

“I was given a two-minute cameo against Kaiserslautern in a game we won 2-0,” he once explained to bundesliga.com. “No less a figure than [72-time Germany international] Hans-Peter Briegel nutmegged me, and I learned a lifelong lesson from it.”
